scop Red Queen

scop Red Queen

With striking red tepals this is the Red Queen.

Horst Kunzler of New Mexico Cactus Research (NMCR) purchased seeds labelled FR991 from a Botanical Garden located in Spain called Pinya De Rosas, presided over by a man named Riviere De Carault.

He grew somewhere around 8 of those seeds into seedlings. His custom was to sell off those seedlings as orders were placed, until he got to the last couple seedlings, which he would save and grow as stock plants. Further orders would result in cuttings from those one or two plants.

It is strongly speculated that the parentage of the cacti is NOT pure scop (FR991) but rather a hybrid created at Pinya De Rosas. This is due to typically longer spination than "pure" scop known from Australian and German/Continental sources.
