This plant has reached 65 years old but nearly disappeared from collections. While I have not seen this plant growing at the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, I was able to purchase a couple Hutch 1597 plants at one of their semiannual plant sales around 2006.
According to Keeper Trout, “Sadly the display specimens of P.C.Hutchison 1597 periodically experiences heavy predation by thieves and is removed from public display to enable it to recover and survive. Almost all Botanical Gardens have regular plant sales that make such thievery a crime that is directed against everyone.”
Collected as a live clone by Paul C. Hutchison on October 10, 1957 above and east of town along road to Piura at elevation 2550 m (8350'). Huancabamba Province, Piura Department, Peru
